This database contains passenger lists of ships that departed from the port of Hamburg, Germany from 1850-1934 (with a gap from 1915-1919 due to World War I). The database includes images of the passenger lists digitized from microfilm in partnership with the Hamburg State Archive, available here for the first time online.
Hi Shirley, I can understand your confusion.When the ships name is given as "Indirekte" it means that the person didn't sail from Copenhagen, but rather from a port such as Hamburg.If you want to find the name of the ship, try ellisisland.org.They have the names of all the people who arrived on Ellis Island from 1892-1924.Good luck. Danish emigrants who did not depart "direckte" on a transatlantic ship from Copenhagen to U.S. departed "indirekte", which I understand means other European ports. I am pretty sure that Indirekte means that the first ship went to Britain for example and that the passengers had to take another ship from there. Relatives of mine who emigrated in 1870 are also in the database with the same Indirekte ship.

"Indirect passengers" were those who were registered on one ship in Hamburg, but transferred to another ship before reaching their final destination. Transfers to other ships occurred mostly in English, French, Belgian, and Dutch ports, and usually had to do with reducing travel costs.
